1871Carl Benz and August Ritter.Foundation of his first firm: »Carl Benz und August Ritter« Mechanische Werkstätten (Mechanical Workshops) Mannheim. 1878First two-stroke engine.Carl Benz begins work on the two-stroke engine. First attempts on New Year´s Eve 1878/79. Longitudinal section drawing of the two-stroke engine in the year 1879. Benz´s first two-stroke engine ran in 1879, and over many years engines of this type formed the backbone of his research.
1880Construction of the first stationary gas engine. 1883New general partnership.October 1, 1883: Establishment of the »Benz & Co., Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik Mannheim« together with Max Rose and Friedrich Wilhelm Eßlinger.
1886Motorcar patented.On January 29, 1886 patent number 37435 is issued for the »Patent Motor Car«. Carl Benz ist sitting at the wheel of his Patent Motor Car, next to him his future commercial manager Josef Brecht. This photograph was taken around the year 1887.
1896August Horch.Workforce of 250. August Horch - initially an assistant - is then employed as works manager of the »Motor Car Construction« department. In 1899 Horch left Mannheim and moved to Cologne. In November 1899 the firm A. Horch & Cie. was registered in the suburb of Ehrenfeld in Cologne under registration number 4689. 1899Transformation.May 10, 1899: Conversion of the partnership to »Benz & Cie., Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik AG (Rhine Gas Engine Factory)«. Capital: 3.000.000 marks.
1908Prosper L’Orange.October 1, 1908: Graduate Engineer Prosper L´Orange moves from the Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz AG (Deutz Gas Engine Factory) to Benz & Cie. in Mannheim and becomes head of »Stationary Engine Construction«. From 1912 on he is a member of the Board of Directors. 1910First Diesel engines.Start of the production of diesel engines, some of which were the company´s own design, while others were Hesselmann engines produced under licence with fuel injection. Voyage of the ship »Fran« with a Benz-Hesselmann engine to the Antarctic. 1912The Benz FX.The Benz FX, a 9,6 litre four-cylinder engine with a nominal output of 105 horsepower, wins the »Kaiser´s prize for the best German aircraft engine«. Second place is taken by the Mercedes DF 80, a 90 horsepower 7,2 litre six-cylinder. Third-place also goes to Benz & Cie. On the testbed: a Benz aircraft engine of type Bz DV with 250 HP.
1920Funnel patent.First pre-combustion chamber diesel engine »R Horo 24«. Benz & Cie. has the »internal combustion engine with ignition chamber« developed by Prosper L´Orange protected by patent. It was only this so-called »funnel patent« DRP 397142 dated March 18, 1919 which made it possible to realise the fast running diesel engine.
1922MWM AG.March 11, 1922: Takeover of the »Stationary Engine Construction« department by the Berlin »Fonfé« financial syndicate. In accordance with the separation agreement of April 22, 1922 the department continues under the name »Motoren-Werke Mannheim AG«. 1924Acquisitions and merger.Road tractor »MWM-Motorpferd« (»Motor Horse«) with 18 horsepower R 18 Z diesel engine. 1926Acquisitions and merger.Takeover of MWM by the Knorr Group of Berlin/Munich and amalgamation of »Benz & Cie., Rheinische Automobil- und Motorenfabrik AG« with »Daimler-Motorengesellschaft« (Daimler Engine Company) in Untertürkheim to form »Daimler-Benz AG«.
1933The KD 15.MWM one and two-cylinder vehicle diesel engines. First small diesel engine (KD 15).
1953Air-cooled diesel engine.Start of the production of air-cooled small diesel engines. The one to eight-cylinder engines are equipped with the patented MWM constant pressure pre-chamber system. This new combustion process results not only in considerably lower noise levels, but also a significant reduction in the stresses placed on engine components. 1979Anniversary year.100 years of engine construction in Mannheim.
1985Acquisition.Takeover of »MWM« by »Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG«.
1998Integration into DEUTZ AG.Full integration of »Motoren-Werke Mannheim AG« (Mannheim Engine Works) into »DEUTZ AG«. All engines produced in Mannheim are marketed under the name »DEUTZ«.
2005DEUTZ Power Systems
On January 1, 2005 the independent subsidiary DEUTZ Power Systems GmbH & Co. KG - the official system provider - is launched on to the market at the high-tech location of Mannheim. 2008DEUTZ Power Systems
